How to Use This 90-Day Plan

Group I is a three-stage exam — Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Your 90-day window is not enough to start from zero in all three stages. Use it as a structured baseline: build breadth for prelims, begin mains answer writing, and lay the foundation for Tamil eligibility.

This plan assumes you have 3–4 hours available daily. If you are a working candidate, adjust the daily blocks but do not skip the writing practice — that is the skill Group I tests hardest.

Phase 1 — Days 1 to 30: Foundation and Coverage

Spend the first month building a factual base across History, Polity, Geography, Economy, and Science. Cover one topic per day using a focused note and 15–20 MCQs. Do not try to be exhaustive.

Tamil Nadu-specific content is mandatory from Day 1: administration structure (Collector → District → Taluk → Village), social reform movements (Periyar, Iyothee Thass, Justice Party), Tamil Nadu geography (Western Ghats, Cauvery, NE monsoon), and welfare schemes (MGR mid-day meal, CM-CHIS, Kalaignar Magalir Urimai).

  • History: Ancient Tamil history (Sangam age, Chola administration, Uttaramerur inscription), Bhakti movement, freedom struggle (Kattabomman, VOC, Subramania Bharathi, Rajaji, Vedaranyam March).
  • Polity: Indian Constitution (Preamble, Fundamental Rights, DPSP), 7th Schedule (Union 97 subjects / State 66 / Concurrent 52), emergency provisions, Article 356 and S.R. Bommai case.
  • Geography: Tamil Nadu — 4 physiographic divisions, Western Ghats (Doddabetta 2637m), Cauvery delta, Coromandel Coast cyclones, NE monsoon (48% of rainfall), Neyveli lignite, Tiruppur knitwear.
  • Economy: India GDP sectors, NITI Aayog vs Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu GSDP, GST Council (Article 279A) and federal concerns, Finance Commission (15th FC: 41% to states).
  • Science: Keep this lean — ISRO missions (Chandrayaan, Gaganyaan), biotech basics, environment: climate change, biodiversity hotspots (Western Ghats), Cauvery water dispute context.
  • Current affairs: Read one newspaper daily, note one Tamil Nadu government action, one national policy, one international event per day.
  • Mains warm-up: Write one 150-word answer every third day on any topic studied. Goal is habit, not quality — that comes in Phase 2.

Phase 2 — Days 31 to 60: Depth and Answer Writing

Stop adding new topics after Day 60. Phase 2 is for going deeper on high-frequency areas and developing mains answer structure. Group I Mains rewards structured, example-rich, balanced answers — not just factual recall.

Start every writing session by identifying the command word (Examine / Analyse / Critically Evaluate / Discuss / Explain). Then follow: Introduction (2–3 sentences, define or contextualize) → Body with Tamil Nadu examples and constitutional references → Conclusion with policy recommendation.

  • Polity depth: Centre-state relations — 7th Schedule conflicts, Article 249/252/253, Article 356 and S.R. Bommai, GST Council voting, Sarkaria and Punchhi Commission recommendations, NEET controversy.
  • History depth: Social reform movements — Vallalar, Vaikunda Swamigal, Iyothee Thass, Justice Party (1916), Self-Respect Movement (1925), devadasi abolition, anti-Hindi agitation 1937–40 and 1965.
  • Economy depth: Welfare schemes with exam data — MGR mid-day meal (1982, first in India), Mahalir Thittam (4 lakh SHGs, 48 lakh women), CM-CHIS (₹5 lakh cover), Kalaignar Magalir Urimai (₹1,000/month, 1 crore women).
  • Essay practice: Write 3 full essays — (1) "Tamil Nadu as a welfare state: examine with evidence", (2) "Centre-state financial relations and GST", (3) "Women empowerment: from Periyar to Magalir Urimai".
  • Tamil eligibility: 45 minutes daily — grammar (sandhi, kuralettu, aytam), comprehension, author-work identification (Thirukkural, Sangam poets, Kamban, Bharathi). Non-negotiable.
  • Current affairs: Build a monthly digest format: TN government schemes, Parliament bills, SC/HC judgements relevant to TN, TNPSC appointments, environment news.
  • Mock test 1: Take one full 200-question prelims mock on Day 45. Analyze by subject — do not just record the total score. Fix the top 3 subject weaknesses before Day 60.

Phase 3 — Days 61 to 90: Full Mocks and Integration

Phase 3 is not for learning new content. It is for testing what you know, filling specific gaps, and building exam-day stamina. Group I prelims is 200 questions in 3 hours — you need the muscle memory of sustained focus.

For mains, write 2–3 full answers per day. Use past Group I mains question papers. Target: 400 words in 25 minutes. If you cannot do that by Day 80, write shorter but structured answers rather than longer but shapeless ones.

  • Prelims mocks: Take 3 full-length mocks (Days 65, 75, 85). After each, spend 2 hours analysing: which subjects lost marks, which question types tripped you, which Tamil Nadu facts you missed.
  • Mains writing: Complete at least 12 full descriptive answers (400–600 words) in Phase 3. Cover: polity, governance, economy, environment, social issues, Tamil Nadu-specific topics.
  • Revision cycle: Days 70–78 — revisit Phase 1 short notes only. Focus on quick-recall tables: article numbers, scheme years, committee names, geographic facts, and current affairs keywords.
  • Tamil eligibility: Complete 3–4 mock Tamil papers under timed conditions. Practice translation sections if they appear in the scheme.
  • Interview light prep: Read your native district history, geography, and 2–3 current issues. Prepare 2 sentences on why you want to serve as a Deputy Collector or DSP.
  • Final 10 days (Days 81–90): Stop all new reading. Revise only: short notes, quick-revision tables, formula cards, key article/scheme numbers, command-word practice. Sleep 7 hours minimum.

Daily Time Blocks for Working Candidates (3 Hours)

If you have only 3 hours daily, protect the answer-writing slot above everything else. Many candidates who read extensively still fail Group I Mains because they never practiced structured descriptive writing.

  • Morning 45 min (commute or pre-work): Current affairs — one newspaper, note 3–5 exam-relevant facts by category (TN govt, India policy, international, environment).
  • Evening 60 min: Subject study — one focused topic, notes using the article's headings and tables. Alternate daily: History → Polity → Geography → Economy → Science/Environment → repeat.
  • Evening 45 min: Answer writing — one 200-word answer (Phase 1), build to 400 words by Day 45. Focus on command-word compliance and Tamil Nadu examples.
  • Evening 30 min: Tamil eligibility — grammar rules or one comprehension passage. Never skip or borrow from this slot.
  • Weekend half day: Mock test or full essay set + error analysis. One topic deep-dive on the area that cost most marks during the week.
  • Sleep and health: Do not study past 10pm consistently. Fatigue destroys retention faster than skipped hours hurt coverage.

Subject Hours Per Week (Adjust After Mock Results)

Use this as a starting point. After your first mock test (Day 45), shift hours from your stronger subjects to your specific weak areas.

  • History and Culture: 5 hrs in Phase 1 → 3 hrs in Phase 2 → 2 hrs in Phase 3
  • Polity, Constitution, Governance: 5 hrs in Phase 1 → 4 hrs in Phase 2 → 2 hrs in Phase 3
  • Geography (TN focus): 4 hrs in Phase 1 → 2 hrs in Phase 2 → 1 hr in Phase 3
  • Economy, Welfare, Schemes: 3 hrs in Phase 1 → 4 hrs in Phase 2 → 2 hrs in Phase 3
  • Science and Environment: 2 hrs per week across all phases
  • Tamil Eligibility: 4 hrs per week — every week, all phases (never reduce)
  • Current Affairs: 5 hrs per week across all phases (daily reading habit)
  • Answer Writing and Essay: 3 hrs Phase 1 → 6 hrs Phase 2 → 8 hrs Phase 3
  • Mock Tests and Analysis: 0 Phase 1 → 3 hrs Phase 2 → 6 hrs Phase 3

Three-phase plan

  • Days 1-30: Syllabus mapping, Tamil Nadu history basics, polity, geography, economy foundation, and first aptitude pass.
  • Days 31-60: Tamil Nadu administration, social reform movements, current affairs integration, previous-paper classification, and weekly answer writing (200 words).
  • Days 61-90: Full mock tests, mains writing sets (400-600 words), Tamil eligibility practice, and interview DAF preparation.

Daily routine for working candidates

  • 2 hours morning: one GS subject or Tamil Nadu topic.
  • 1 hour evening: aptitude, Tamil eligibility, or current affairs.
  • 30 minutes before sleep: revision of facts, dates, schemes, or Tamil grammar rules.
  • Weekend: one full mock or two previous papers plus error analysis.
