Current affairs preparation for Group I prelims, mains, and interview stages.

Notification is final

This guide helps you prepare and navigate official links. Confirm the latest TNPSC notification before applying, paying fees, downloading hall tickets, or checking results.

What TNPSC Group I Tests — Two Formats, One Preparation

Current affairs in Group I is not breaking news. TNPSC tests events that have administrative, social, economic, or governance significance — with strong Tamil Nadu weighting. Focus: past 12 months before the notification date (not the exam date). This distinction matters — candidates who prepare current affairs for the wrong time window miss questions.

Two test formats demand two kinds of preparation: Prelims tests MCQ facts (scheme name, launch year, scheme amount, appointment name). Mains tests analytical connection (how this event relates to a policy, constitutional provision, or administrative framework). Build notes for both.

High-Yield Categories — Where Group I Questions Come From

Not all current affairs get questions. Focus your time on categories that consistently produce Group I questions.

  • Tamil Nadu Government actions (highest frequency): New welfare schemes (name, exact launch date, beneficiary count, annual budget), GO orders with policy significance, new districts or administrative reorganisation (TN has changed district boundaries multiple times), judicial verdicts where TN government is a party. Every TN government scheme that hits newspapers is a potential MCQ.
  • Madras High Court and Supreme Court — Tamil Nadu cases: Centre-state disputes are Group I's speciality. Governor withholding bills → Article 200 interpretation. NEET and Concurrent List Entry 25. Cauvery water sharing. S.R. Bommai application. These judicial events are both current affairs AND constitutional law for Mains.
  • Parliament and Central legislation: Focus on bills that have a TN angle or a constitutional dimension — Forest Conservation Amendment, Waqf Amendment, Right to Information amendments, data protection legislation. For each bill: what it amends, what TN's legislative response was, what the constitutional basis is.
  • Union Budget provisions affecting Tamil Nadu: PMAY allocation to TN, road and railway projects in TN announced, green energy investments (TN leads in solar and wind), health mission funding. The Budget is released in February — this is a high-density current affairs event for both Prelims and Mains.
  • RBI and economic policy: Repo rate changes (monetary policy stance), inflation data (CPI vs. WPI), GDP growth quarterly data, GSDP comparison (TN is typically 3rd–5th among states). GST Council decisions — any TN-specific compensation or dispute gets questions.
  • ISRO and science missions: Every major ISRO mission gets questions. Know: mission name, objective, outcome, date, and one distinctive feature. Recent high-probability: Chandrayaan-3 (first soft landing near lunar south pole, August 2023), Gaganyaan crew selection, Aditya-L1 (solar observation). DRDO test launches also appear.
  • Environment and climate in Tamil Nadu: TNPCB air quality orders, Cauvery water release disputes (seasonal news), cyclone alerts and State Disaster Relief response (TN is high-cyclone-frequency state on Coromandel Coast), Western Ghats conservation orders, Sterlite/Thoothukudi pollution case follow-ups.

Daily Reading Method — Extract, Not Absorb

Reading without extraction is time wasted. A newspaper reading system for Group I must produce a note every session, otherwise the information evaporates within 72 hours.

  • Primary source: The Hindu (national policy, Centre-state issues, SC/HC judgements, international). Secondary: Dinamalar or Daily Thanthi (Tamil Nadu government actions, welfare scheme updates — these often do not appear in national newspapers). Read ONE newspaper completely, not three partially.
  • 30-second extraction per article: Ask three questions — (1) Is this event in a TNPSC-relevant category? (2) What is the Tamil Nadu connection? (3) What is the single most exam-likely fact (year, amount, name, number)? Skip articles that fail question 1.
  • Note format — one line per event: "Date | Category | Event name | Key exam fact". Example: "Jan 2025 | TN Scheme | Kalaignar Kanavu Illam housing scheme | 4 lakh beneficiaries, ₹25,000 crore outlay." This one-line format is fast to write and fast to revise.
  • Weekly Sunday review: Spend 20 minutes reviewing the week's notes. Mark the 5 most likely exam questions in red. These go into your monthly digest. Delete entries that are clearly non-exam-relevant (delayed event, reversed policy).
  • What NOT to read: Celebrity news, IPL/cricket unless a social policy issue arises, state-level electoral speculation without policy content, opinion columns (read only editorials that explain policy). Time in → exam probability out.

Key Standing Facts to Know for 2025 Group I Current Affairs

These facts from 2023–2025 have appeared or are highly likely in Group I Prelims and Mains. Build them into your revision sheet.

Monthly Digest Template — One Page Per Month

At the end of each month, convert all daily notes into a structured one-page digest. This becomes your revision document 2 weeks before Prelims and the reference sheet for Mains answers.

  • Section 1 — Tamil Nadu Government (3–5 items): New schemes with name + date + beneficiary + budget | GO orders with policy significance | Administrative changes (new district collector postings in news, police transfers if policy-related)
  • Section 2 — Parliament and Central Government (3–5 items): Bills passed or introduced | Supreme Court verdicts with national significance | Central scheme major milestones (PMAY completions, Jal Jeevan Mission progress)
  • Section 3 — Economy and Finance (3–5 items): RBI policy decisions | Finance Ministry data (GDP, fiscal deficit, trade balance) | GST Council decisions affecting TN | Major investments in TN (SIPCOT allotments, FDI announcements)
  • Section 4 — Environment and Science (2–3 items): ISRO missions | Environmental clearances or controversies in TN | Climate events (cyclone season) | TNPCB major orders
  • Section 5 — International with India/TN angle (2–3 items): India-Sri Lanka, India-ASEAN, India-US relations with TN trade implications | UN reports (HDI, climate reports) where India/TN rank appears
  • Section 6 — Key Appointments (2–3 items): New Chief Secretary TN, DGP TN, TNPSC Chairman, Madras HC Chief Justice — these appear both in MCQs and as interview questions ("Who is the current...?")

Connecting Current Affairs to Mains Answers

Current affairs become most valuable in Mains when you use them as evidence within analytical answers, not as standalone facts. A current example elevates any answer from textbook-level to exam-hall-level.

  • For Centre-state relations answers: Use recent Governor bill controversy + SC 2024 ruling + Article 200 analysis. This is both a current event and a constitutional law point.
  • For women empowerment answers: Use Kalaignar Magalir Urimai (₹1,000/month, 2022) as evidence of direct benefit transfer approach. Compare with Mahalir Thittam (SHG approach, 1997). Show evolution of Tamil Nadu's women empowerment policy over 25 years.
  • For federalism and finance answers: Use 15th Finance Commission devolution data (41% to states) + GST Council TN position as a net contributor state + Cauvery water dispute as natural resource federalism example.
  • For essay topics on technology / governance: Use ISRO Chandrayaan-3 success as India's soft power AND scientific capacity demonstration. Use TN's UPI leadership and e-Sevai digital delivery as sub-national governance innovation.
  • For environmental answers: Use Western Ghats conservation orders, TN cyclone preparedness (Disaster Management Act response), Cauvery flow data as evidence for both climate stress AND inter-state cooperative federalism.

How to prepare

  • Separate current affairs into Tamil Nadu, India, international, economy, science, environment, reports, and governance themes.
  • For mains, convert news into issue notes: background, problem, government action, challenges, way forward.
  • For interview, prepare balanced opinions on major public issues without extreme or unsupported claims.
