The Rule: Finish One Book Before Buying Another

Group I preparation fails on books more than on effort. Candidates buy 12–15 books, read 30 % of each, and blame time. The correct list is 6–8 sources — finished, revised, and tested at least twice.

Start with free Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi and NCERT textbooks. Add one reference per subject only after you have exhausted the school-level material and found a specific gap. Every book on this list has been recommended repeatedly by Group I rank-holders.

Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi Textbooks — Free, Mandatory

These are the single most important source for Group I. TNPSC questions — prelims and mains — are set directly from Samacheer Kalvi content far more often than from any paid guide. Download every one from textbooks.online.tn.gov.in at no cost.

  • Classes 6–10 History, Geography, Civics, Economics — cover Tamil Nadu history, social reform movements, geography, welfare schemes, and constitutional basics.
  • Classes 11–12 History — Sangam age, Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, medieval period, British rule, freedom movement, social justice movements.
  • Classes 11–12 Political Science — Indian polity, constitution, directive principles, local bodies, centre-state relations.
  • Classes 11–12 Economics — Indian economy, planning, poverty, agriculture, banking, RBI, taxation, budget, globalisation.
  • Classes 6–12 Science — Physics, Chemistry, Biology basics tested in prelims general science paper.
  • Classes 11–12 Geography — Physical geography, climate, rivers, soils, natural resources, population, industries.

NCERT Textbooks — Free, High Value for GS Basics

NCERT books cover Indian-level content where Samacheer Kalvi is lighter. Download free from ncert.nic.in. Use Classes 6–12 for History, Geography, Polity, and Economics.

  • NCERT Class 6–10 History (Our Pasts I, II, III) — Indus Valley, Vedic, Maurya, Gupta, Delhi Sultanate, Mughal, colonial periods.
  • NCERT Class 11 "India Physical Environment" + Class 12 "Fundamentals of Human Geography" — physical geography, monsoon, rivers, natural vegetation, population.
  • NCERT Class 11 "Indian Constitution at Work" + Class 12 "Politics in India since Independence" — polity and governance basics.
  • NCERT Class 11 "Indian Economic Development" + Class 12 "Introductory Macroeconomics" — economic policy, development, planning.

One Reference Per Subject — Buy Only After NCERT/Samacheer

These books fill gaps that school textbooks leave. Buy one per subject. Do not buy two books for the same subject — it duplicates content and burns revision time.

  • Indian Polity — M. Laxmikanth (McGraw Hill, ₹680–750): constitutional amendments, parliament, judiciary, president, governor, constitutional bodies. Essential for mains polity depth.
  • Indian Economy — Ramesh Singh (McGraw Hill, ₹580–650): economic reforms, sectoral analysis, banking, fiscal policy, international trade. Use alongside NCERT Class 12.
  • Certificate Physical and Human Geography — Goh Cheng Leong (Oxford, ₹380–450): climatology, geomorphology, oceanography, biomes. Fills gaps in physical geography for GS Paper I.
  • General Science for Competitive Exams — Lucent's (₹220–280): physics, chemistry, biology summaries with previous-question patterns. Use only for revision — Samacheer is the base.
  • Quantitative Aptitude — R.S. Aggarwal (S. Chand, ₹420–480): percentage, profit-loss, time-work, speed-distance, data interpretation. Standard aptitude reference for prelims.
  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning — R.S. Aggarwal (S. Chand, ₹350–420): series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, analogies. Same author, complementary to the aptitude book.

Tamil Eligibility — Tamil Grammar and Comprehension

Tamil eligibility is qualifying in Group I but low scorers have lost the post after crossing prelims and mains cutoffs. Do not ignore it.

  • Samacheer Kalvi Tamil textbooks Classes 6–12 — grammar rules, prose, poetry, comprehension. Free and directly tested.
  • TNPSC Tamil Ilakkanam guide (any reputed publisher, ₹180–250): covers ilakanam topics from past TNPSC qualifying papers — noun forms, verb conjugation, sandhi, figures of speech.
  • Tamil previous papers: practice 5–6 qualifying paper years under timed conditions. Grammar pattern is predictable across years.

Current Affairs — What to Read Every Day

Current affairs for Group I needs Tamil Nadu focus — state government schemes, policy changes, welfare updates, high court rulings, budget announcements, and district-level news — alongside national and international events.

  • The Hindu or Indian Express daily: read editorial, Tamil Nadu page, national policy, environment, science, economy news. Underline and note in one notebook.
  • Dinamani or Dinathanthi (Tamil): TN government announcements, welfare schemes, CM office circulars, district events — covered better in Tamil dailies than English press.
  • Monthly current affairs PDF: Vision IAS, Next IAS, or TNPSC-specific compilations (₹0–120/month online): good for revision but do not replace daily reading.
  • TNPSC official notifications, press releases, and TN government G.O.s: bookmark tnpsc.gov.in/notifications and tn.gov.in/government-orders for direct sourcing.

Previous Question Papers — Non-Negotiable

Previous papers are the most accurate indicator of question depth, topic frequency, and option design. Solve at least 5 full Group I prelims papers before any mock test.

  • TNPSC official question papers: download free from tnpsc.gov.in/previous-question-papers — 2024, 2023, 2022, 2019, 2018 Group I prelims papers are available.
  • Subject-wise paper classification: after solving, categorize wrong answers by subject. Polity, economy, or aptitude weak? That subject needs a second revision cycle, not a new book.
  • Group I Mains previous papers: available on the same page for 2023 and 2022 — read the questions to calibrate expected depth, length, and structure before starting mains preparation.
  • Compiled previous paper books (any publisher, ₹250–380): useful for offline practice. Ensure the edition includes at least 2022–2024 papers.

What Not to Buy

These are common money-wasting purchases that do not improve Group I scores.

  • General Knowledge almanacs (Manorama, Pratiyogita Darpana yearbooks): too broad, most content is irrelevant to Group I pattern. Use targeted current affairs instead.
  • Coaching institute printed notes from other states: UPSC-pattern coaching material is often too dense for TNPSC and misses Tamil Nadu-specific focus areas.
  • Multiple polity books: Laxmikanth plus DD Basu plus one more polity book is redundant. Laxmikanth alone covers Group I polity completely.
  • Speed-read summary books: 10-page "entire NCERT summary" guides skip context, comparisons, and examples that Group I mains questions target.

Resource order

  • Start with the official syllabus and previous papers.
  • Use Tamil Nadu school textbooks for basics where the syllabus overlaps with school-level General Studies.
  • Add one standard book per subject only after the syllabus checklist is clear.

Buying rule

  • Avoid old-pattern books unless they clearly match the latest notification.
  • Prefer books with topic-wise PYQs and current Tamil Nadu coverage.
