Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Group II and Group IIA?
Group II includes interview posts (Sub-Inspector of Police, Block Development Officer) requiring Prelims + Mains + Interview. Group IIA is a single MCQ paper (200 questions, 300 marks) for non-interview posts. Both use the same preliminary exam, but Group IIA selection ends there.
Is Group IV preparation useful for Group II / IIA?
Yes. The GS syllabus (History, Polity, Geography, Science, Economy) is largely the same. Group IV notes on this site are valid for Group II / IIA preparation. Group II / IIA requires deeper coverage, especially for Tamil Nadu administration, current affairs, and mains writing (Group II only).
How many questions come from Tamil Nadu topics?
Approximately 50–60 questions out of 200 are Tamil Nadu-specific — this includes TN History (dynasties, colonial period, freedom struggle), TN Geography (rivers, districts, soils), TN Economy (schemes, agriculture), and Tamil Nadu Society & Culture (Bhakti, arts, reform movements).
Do prelims marks count in Group II final selection?
No. For Group II, the preliminary exam is used only to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination. Only the Main Examination marks (and Interview for interview posts) determine the final rank. For Group IIA, the preliminary exam is the final exam — marks count directly.
Can I prepare for Group II and Group IIA simultaneously?
Yes — and this is the recommended approach. Both share the same prelims. Start with prelims preparation. After the prelims, Group IIA candidates are done with written exams, while Group II candidates continue to Mains. Having a common prelims preparation phase is efficient.
