Overview

Current affairs is the section that separates candidates who just know the syllabus from those who are actively engaged with the world. It carries ~25 questions in prelims (about 12% of marks) and has higher weightage in Group II Mains. The key is strategic selection — you cannot follow every news item. You need a system.

What TNPSC Actually Asks

What to SKIP (Time Management)

You cannot follow everything. These topics rarely give exam returns for the time invested:

  • Detailed state-by-state politics outside Tamil Nadu
  • Minor international events without India connection
  • Sports events where India did not win or participate significantly
  • Detailed scientific discoveries (only the headline, not deep science)
  • Foreign election results (unless India has a strategic relationship)

Daily Current Affairs Routine (30 Minutes)

Morning (15 minutes) — The Hindu / Dinamalar

Read only these sections: 1. Front page (national and Tamil Nadu) 2. Editorial (1 per day — builds analytical ability for Mains) 3. Sports (only medal/championship results) 4. Economy/Business (major policy changes, RBI/SEBI announcements only)

Skip:

  • Full cricket/entertainment coverage
  • Detailed foreign news
  • Market indices (unless a record high/low)

Evening (15 minutes) — Note-making

Write one short note per day in this format:

Event: Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam extended to all families Date: January 2026 Key fact: ₹1,000/month; women-headed households priority Why important: TN welfare scheme; TNPSC asks scheme + year + benefit

Over a month, this gives you 30 clean notes covering key events.
