Best Books for TNPSC Preparation 2026 — Subject-wise Complete List with Reviews

Complete TNPSC book guide for Tamil Nadu students — best books for every subject, honest reviews, which books to prioritise for Group 1/2/4, and how to study each book.

Updated 22 May 2026

The Golden Rule — Samacheer Kalvi First

Before buying a single coaching guide or joining a test series, do this one thing: download the Samacheer Kalvi textbooks for free.

Go to tnschools.gov.in — the official Tamil Nadu government portal — and download every Samacheer Kalvi book from Class 6 to Class 12. All books are available as free PDFs. There is no reason to pay for them.

Why Samacheer Kalvi is non-negotiable:

60–70% of TNPSC questions in every group — from Group 4 to Group 1 — are drawn directly from Tamil Nadu State Board textbooks. TNPSC examiners write questions from these books. If you haven't read a chapter in Samacheer Kalvi Social Science or Science, you cannot answer questions from it — no matter how many coaching guides you have read.

The most common mistake Tamil Nadu TNPSC aspirants make is this: they buy Sura's guides, join a coaching centre, watch YouTube shortcuts — and never properly read Samacheer Kalvi Class 10 History or Class 9 Geography. Then they wonder why they can't cross 130 out of 200.

The guides and coaching material are summaries of Samacheer Kalvi. The original is always better than the summary.

Free Samacheer Kalvi PDF sources:

  • tnschools.gov.in — official Tamil Nadu government portal
  • padasalai.net — popular, easy to navigate, all classes available
  • tnpscmaterials.in — subject-wise organised downloads

Download these today. Start reading tomorrow.

Section 1: Tamil Nadu History — The Highest-Scoring Topic

Tamil Nadu History consistently gives 15–18 marks in Group 4 and 20–25 marks in Group 2. No other topic has this return on investment.

Primary Sources (Read these first)

Samacheer Kalvi Class 11 History — Tamil Nadu Chapters This is the most important single book for TNPSC TN History. The chapters covering Sangam Age, Pallava dynasty, Chola empire, Pandya kingdom, and Nayak period are exam gold. Read these chapters at least three times. Make your own notes with timelines.

Samacheer Kalvi Class 12 History — Nationalism and Independence Focus chapters: Indian National Movement, Tamil Nadu freedom fighters (Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Dheeran Chinnamalai, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Subramania Bharati, Marudhu Brothers), Partition, Republic formation.

Samacheer Kalvi Class 10 History The Class 10 book bridges ancient and modern periods. Read the chapters on British rule in Tamil Nadu and the early nationalist movement.

Supplementary Book

Sura's Tamil Nadu History Guide (Rs. 150–250) A Q&A format guide organised chapter by chapter. Good for revision after you have read the Samacheer books. Not a replacement — use it to test your recall and plug gaps.

What to Focus On

  • Sangam Age: Three Sangam periods, Sangam literature (Purananuru, Akananuru, Silappatikaram, Manimekalai), Sangam kings
  • Pallava Dynasty: Mahendravarman I, Narasimhavarman I (Mamallan), Mahabalipuram (Shore Temple), Kanchipuram
  • Chola Empire (9th–13th century): Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola, Brihadeeswara Temple, naval expeditions to Southeast Asia
  • Pandya and Nayak kingdoms: Madurai Nayaks, Thirumalai Nayak palace, Meenakshi Amman temple
  • Tamil Nadu and British rule: Fort St. George, Madras Presidency, early resistance
  • TN freedom fighters: Every name above with dates and key contributions

M. Lakshmikanth — Indian Polity

Publisher: Oxford University Press / TMH (both editions are equally good) Price: Rs. 600–700 Available: Online (Amazon, Flipkart) or at any competitive exam bookshop

This is the single most universally recommended book for TNPSC, UPSC, banking, and SSC exams. There is no better Indian Polity reference book available in English.

How to use it:

  • Read one chapter, pause, and make notes in bullet points.
  • After every chapter, close the book and write down the 5–7 most important points from memory.
  • Then come back and check what you missed.
  • Practice 10–15 MCQs on that chapter from any TNPSC question bank.

Supplementary

Samacheer Kalvi Class 9 Civics + Class 11–12 Political Science TNPSC often asks questions that are answered in Samacheer Civics but not in Lakshmikanth — especially questions about Tamil Nadu local body administration, Panchayat structure in TN, and TN-specific constitutional provisions. Read these alongside Lakshmikanth.

Section 4: Geography — Tamil Nadu Focus First

Tamil Nadu Geography (Mandatory for All Groups)

Samacheer Class 8 Geography — "Our Tamil Nadu" chapters Read every line. Tamil Nadu's rivers (Kaveri, Palar, Vaigai, Tamiraparani, Cheyyar), districts, agro-climatic zones, major crops (paddy, sugarcane, banana, groundnut, cotton), industries (leather — Vellore, textiles — Coimbatore, automobiles — Chennai).

Samacheer Class 9 and 10 Geography India's physical features, rainfall patterns, soil types, agriculture, population distribution, major industries. 10–15 questions come from India geography in Group 4.

India Geography

NCERT Class 11 — India: Physical Environment (free at ncert.nic.in) For Group 2 and Group 1 aspirants: this book covers India's physiography, drainage, climate, natural vegetation, and soils at the right depth for exam questions. Read the full book.

G.C. Leong — Certificate Physical and Human Geography (Rs. 400–500) Recommended for Group 1 only. Covers world geography topics that appear in Group 1 prelims and Mains. Not needed for Group 4 or Group 2.

  • Physical features: Himalayan ranges, Western and Eastern Ghats, Deccan Plateau, Gangetic plain
  • National parks and wildlife sanctuaries: Mudumalai (TN), Anamalai (TN), Kalakkad-Mundanthurai (TN), Ranthambore, Kaziranga

Section 5: Indian Economy — Selective Reading

For Group 4

Samacheer Class 10 Economics + Class 12 Economics Sufficient for Group 4 Economy questions. Covers GDP, national income, Five Year Plans, inflation, banking basics, RBI functions, poverty, unemployment. Read every chapter carefully.

For Group 2

Ramesh Singh — Indian Economy (McGraw Hill, Rs. 700–800) The standard Group 2 economy reference. Do not read the entire book for Group 2 — focus on:

  • Economic planning (Five Year Plans, NITI Aayog)

  • Agriculture: Green Revolution, land reforms, farm schemes
  • Banking system: RBI, commercial banks, NABARD, SHG, cooperative credit
  • Recent budgets: Key allocations for Tamil Nadu, welfare schemes

Section 6: General Science — The Marks No One Should Lose

General Science gives 20–25 marks in Group 4. Every single mark here comes from Samacheer Kalvi Class 6–10 Science. There is no shortcut and no separate book needed.

Primary Source (Non-negotiable)

Samacheer Kalvi Science — Class 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (all five books)

Read every chapter. Every chapter. The Class 6 chapter on "Food and Health" has appeared in TNPSC papers. The Class 10 chapter on "Heredity" has appeared. Nothing is too basic to skip.

Class 6–8 Science focus areas:

  • Types of diseases (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic) — names and examples
  • Vitamins: A, B, C, D, E, K — deficiency diseases for each
  • Human body organs: functions of liver, kidney, heart, lungs, pancreas
  • Photosynthesis, respiration — basic equations
  • States of matter, elements and compounds, physical vs chemical change

Class 9–10 Science focus areas:

  • Atomic structure: Bohr model, electron configuration
  • Periodic table: First 20 elements by name and symbol, groups (alkali metals, halogens, noble gases)
  • Newton's three laws of motion with examples
  • Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, SI units
  • Human reproductive system, Mendelian genetics basics, DNA structure
  • Diseases: TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), Malaria (Plasmodium, vector Anopheles), Dengue (Aedes), COVID, Cholera

Supplementary Book

Lucent's General Science (Rs. 200–250) A compact Q&A reference. After reading Samacheer thoroughly, use Lucent's to quiz yourself. Good for the final month of revision. Do not use as primary source.

Section 7: Aptitude and Mathematics — Where Group 4 Is Won or Lost

Aptitude is 100 out of 200 marks in Group 4. It is also the most improvable section — unlike General Studies where you either know a historical fact or you don't, Aptitude rewards consistent practice.

R.S. Aggarwal — Quantitative Aptitude

Publisher: S. Chand Price: Rs. 450–550 Available: Amazon, Flipkart, any competitive exam bookshop

This is the standard Aptitude book for every competitive exam in India — TNPSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, all use this. Buy it once. It will serve you across multiple exam preparations.

How to use it:

  • Work through 1 chapter per day — do not skip chapters.
  • Read the worked examples in each chapter first. Understand the method.
  • Then solve all the exercise questions (both A and B levels).
  • Do not check the answer immediately — attempt the question fully first.
  • After completing a chapter, revise it again after 3 days (spaced repetition).

Chapters for Group 4 (first 20 chapters sufficient): 1. Number System 2. HCF and LCM 3. Decimal Fractions 4. Simplification 5. Square Roots and Cube Roots 6. Average 7. Problems on Ages 8. Percentage 9. Profit and Loss 10. Discount 11. Simple Interest 12. Compound Interest 13. Time and Work 14. Pipes and Cisterns 15. Time and Distance 16. Problems on Trains 17. Boats and Streams 18. Area (Plane figures) 19. Volume and Surface Area 20. Data Interpretation (Tables, Bar charts, Pie charts)

For Group 2 and Group 1: Add chapters 21–30 (Ratio, Proportion, Partnership, Alligation, Probability, Permutation/Combination).

Section 8: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning

R.S. Aggarwal — Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Publisher: S. Chand Price: Rs. 450 Available: Amazon, Flipkart, all bookshops

Buy this alongside the Quantitative Aptitude book. Both are by R.S. Aggarwal, both by S. Chand — together they cover the entire Aptitude paper.

Verbal Reasoning chapters (prioritise these for TNPSC):

  • Number Series — fill the missing term; find the odd one out
  • Alphabet and Letter Series — very common in TNPSC
  • Analogy (Word analogy, Number analogy) — 5–8 questions per paper
  • Blood Relations — draw a family tree for each question, do not solve mentally
  • Direction and Distance — draw the path as you read; never visualise
  • Coding-Decoding — look for the pattern in the code shift
  • Seating Arrangement — use a table/circle diagram

Non-Verbal Reasoning: TNPSC uses less non-verbal (figure-based) reasoning than Banking exams. Practice the Mirror Images, Water Images, and Pattern Completion chapters — these occasionally appear.

Daily practice target: Once you start this book, solve 20–30 reasoning questions every single day. Reasoning speed improves only with daily practice — not with a single heavy session.

Section 9: Tamil Language

Sura's TNPSC Tamil (Tamil medium, Rs. 150–250)

Covers the Tamil portion of the exam: grammar (இலக்கணம்), Thirukkural, Tamil literature questions. This book is structured specifically for TNPSC and covers exactly what the exam tests.

Nila Publications TNPSC Tamil (Rs. 200–300) Popular among Tamil medium aspirants, especially in districts outside Chennai. Alternative to Sura's Tamil — both are good. Buy whichever is more easily available in your area.

What to focus on in Tamil:

Tamil Grammar (இலக்கணம்) — most marks come from here:

  • வினை (Verb): வினைமுற்று, வினையெச்சம், வினையாலணையும் பெயர்
  • பெயர் (Noun): திணை, பால், வேற்றுமை (8 case suffixes)

Thirukkural:

  • All 133 chapters (அதிகாரம்) and their names — memorise the chapter titles
  • First couplet of each chapter is commonly tested
  • Key kurals from: அறத்துப்பால் (Virtue), பொருட்பால் (Wealth), காமத்துப்பால் (Love)

Sangam Literature basics:

  • Five Sangam periods and their Tamil names
  • Major Sangam works: Purananuru, Akananuru, Kuruntokai, Silappatikaram, Manimekalai
  • Tolkappiyam — first Tamil grammar book, by Tolkappiyar

Section 10: Current Affairs

Dinamalar or Dinamani — Daily Newspaper

Price: Rs. 5–7 per day / Rs. 150–200 per month subscription

Reading a Tamil newspaper daily is the only way to stay current with Tamil Nadu-specific news that TNPSC tests. International and national news matters too, but TNPSC Group 4 disproportionately tests Tamil Nadu state events.

What to read every day:

  • Tamil Nadu government schemes: new housing schemes, welfare payments, farmer relief programmes
  • Chief Minister and Governor: new appointments, inaugurations, key orders
  • High Court and Supreme Court: significant judgments affecting TN
  • Major sports: Tamil Nadu players in national/international events, sports awards
  • Awards: Padma awards for TN people, national awards for TN organisations

How to use it: Keep a small notebook. Every day, write 5–8 items in this format:

`[Date][Topic][Key fact]`
Example: `Jan 5, 2025TN GovtAnnounced Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam — Rs. 1,000/month to eligible women`

Review this notebook weekly. It becomes your Current Affairs revision bank.

Sura's Monthly Current Affairs Magazine

Price: Rs. 50–60 per issue Available: TNPSC book stalls, Sura's website, Amazon subscription

Buy every month without fail. The Tamil Nadu section of this magazine is its most valuable part — it compiles all major TN state events in organised form. Read the TN section first, then national, then international.

Section 11: All-in-One Combined Guides

These guides collect and summarise material from Samacheer Kalvi and other primary sources into a single book. They are useful for revision and for candidates who want a quick overview before going deeper into primary sources.

PublisherGuidePriceBest For
Sura BooksTNPSC Group 4 Study MaterialRs. 400–550Group 4 and VAO beginners
Sura BooksTNPSC Group 2 Study MaterialRs. 550–700Group 2 and 2A aspirants

Nila PublicationsTNPSC Tamil GuideRs. 200–350Tamil medium aspirants
Race InstituteTNPSC Study MaterialRs. 800–1,200Group 1 and Group 2 Main aspirants

Honest assessment: Every one of these guides is a condensed version of Samacheer Kalvi books. Their practice questions and Q&A sections are genuinely useful. Their explanations are faster to read than Samacheer.

But if you rely only on these guides and skip Samacheer Kalvi — you will miss questions. TNPSC examiners write questions from the original textbooks. A guide that covers 5 points from a Samacheer chapter with 15 points will leave you unable to answer the other 10.

Correct way to use them: Read Samacheer first. Use the guide for revision after you have read the primary source. Use the practice questions section every week.

Section 12: Online Free Resources

All of these are free. Use them throughout your preparation, not just at the end.

Final Buying Guide — What to Spend at Each Level

Do not overspend. The most expensive preparation is not the most effective one. Samacheer Kalvi books are free.

LevelMust BuyOptionalTotal Budget
Group 4 beginnerSamacheer books (free PDF) + Sura's Group 4 Guide (Rs. 500) + RS Aggarwal Aptitude (Rs. 500)Lucent's Science (Rs. 250), Sura's Tamil (Rs. 200)Rs. 1,000–1,500

Group 1 aspirantAll the above + RS Aggarwal complete + GC Leong + Monthly Current Affairs (Rs. 720/year)Coaching institute notes, test series (Rs. 2,000–5,000)Rs. 4,000–6,000

What not to waste money on:

  • Printed coaching materials before you have read Samacheer — they are summaries, not sources
  • YouTube "shortcut tricks" channels — TNPSC does not reward shortcuts in General Studies
  • Expensive test series without first completing the syllabus — mocks are for revision, not for learning

What is worth spending on:

  • A good A4 notebook for each subject — writing your own notes doubles retention
  • Monthly current affairs magazine (Rs. 50/month) — genuinely useful and non-replaceable
  • R.S. Aggarwal books — used for multiple exams, worth every rupee
