Step-by-step answers for all textbook questions in this chapter
What is Diversity?
Diversity means the different ways in which people live. People differ in:
- Language they speak
- Food they eat
- Clothes they wear
- Religion they follow
- Festivals they celebrate
- Occupations they do
Diversity is normal and enriching. It makes life more interesting.
India — A Land of Diversity
India has great diversity in geography, climate, food, clothes, language and religion. Two regions show this clearly:
Ladakh (in the north)
| Feature | Ladakh |
|---|---|
| Climate | Very cold, mountain desert |
| Geography | High mountains |
| Food | Meat, milk, wool products |
| Economy | Sheep and goat herding; pashmina wool |
| Religion | Buddhism and Islam |
Kerala (in the south)
| Feature | Kerala |
|---|---|
| Climate | Warm, wet, coastal |
| Geography | Sea coast, backwaters |
| Food | Rice, fish, coconut |
| Economy | Spices, fishing, coconut farming |
| Religion | Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism |
How Does Diversity Arise?
Diversity comes from two main things:
1. Geography — mountains, rivers, climate and soil shape how people live, farm and eat. 2. History — the movement and mixing of people over thousands of years blended languages, food and customs.
- People moved for trade, work, safety or conquest and brought their ways of life with them.
- Over time, cultures mixed and new customs grew up.
Unity in Diversity
- Even with all the differences, Indians live together as one people and one nation.
- This idea is called "unity in diversity" — a great strength of our country.
The same story, like the Ramayana, is told in many different languages across India — a beautiful example of unity in diversity.
Key Vocabulary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Diversity | The different ways in which people live |
| Geography | The land, climate and rivers of a place |
| Pashmina | Fine warm wool from Ladakh |
| Unity in diversity | Different people living together as one nation |
| Region | A large area with common features |
Exam Tips
- Define diversity as the different ways people live (language, food, clothes, religion, festivals, work).
- Compare Ladakh (cold, pashmina, Buddhism/Islam) with Kerala (coastal, spices, many religions) — a favourite 3-mark question.
- Diversity comes from geography and history (movement and mixing of people) — two reasons only.
- Unity in diversity = many languages/customs, one nation — explain with an example like the Ramayana in many languages.
- Diversity is normal and useful, not a problem — the chapter's main message.
