What Is TNPSC Group 4?
TNPSC Group 4 is the gateway for Tamil Nadu government jobs at the clerical and field-level. Conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), it is one of the most applied-for exams in the state — with lakhs of candidates competing for a few thousand posts each cycle.
If you are a Class 12 pass student looking for a stable government job in Tamil Nadu, Group 4 is where you start. No Mains. No interview. One paper — and your entire future depends on how well you prepare for it.
Posts Covered in TNPSC Group 4
| Post | Department | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Assistant | Various TN Govt departments | HSC (Class 12) |
| Bill Collector | Local bodies / Municipalities | HSC |
| Field Surveyor | Survey & Settlement Department | HSC + Survey Training |
| Typist | Various departments | HSC + Typing Speed Certificate |
| VAO (Village Administrative Officer) | Revenue Department | Degree (any discipline) |
| Junior Cooperative Inspector | Cooperation Department | HSC |
| Steno-Typist | Various departments | HSC + Shorthand certificate |
Note: VAO (Village Administrative Officer) is conducted under a separate notification but follows the same syllabus and exam structure as Group 4. The key difference is that VAO requires a bachelor's degree.
Exam Pattern — Simple and Clear
Group 4 has the most straightforward exam pattern in the TNPSC family.
Single paper: 200 questions — 200 marks — 3 hours
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Studies (Part A) | 100 questions | 100 marks |
| Aptitude & Mental Ability (Part B) | 100 questions | 100 marks |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
Key points:
- All questions are objective (multiple choice) — no descriptive writing
- No negative marking for most posts (verify in official notification)
- No Mains exam — one paper decides everything
- No interview — cut-off score determines selection
- Medium: Tamil or English (your choice at registration)
Typical cut-off to get a posting: 140–155 out of 200 depending on category and community. OC candidates generally need 148+; BC/MBC 140+; SC/ST 130+. These vary each notification.

|---|
Month 4: Aptitude Intensive
This month is dedicated entirely to Aptitude (100 marks). Most candidates who fail Group 4 lose marks here — don't be one of them.
Week 1 — Number system through Percentage (RS Aggarwal Ch. 1–6)
- Do every worked example in the book — don't skip
- Solve all exercises (A and B levels)
- Target: 30 questions per day minimum
Week 2 — Profit & Loss, SI & CI, Time & Work (Ch. 7–12)
- These three topics alone give 8–12 questions in most Group 4 papers
- Formulas: Write them on flashcards. Review morning and night.
Week 3 — Speed-Time-Distance, Area & Volume (Ch. 13–17)
- Practice Train, Boat, and Pipe problems separately — common in TNPSC
Week 4 — Reasoning: RS Aggarwal Verbal Reasoning
- Number series, alphabet series, analogies — 1 chapter per day
- Blood relations and directions — practice daily until 100% accuracy
- Coding-decoding — 20 questions daily
Aptitude target by end of Month 4: 75+ out of 100 in a timed practice paper.
Month 5: First Full Revision + Previous Year Papers
Week 1–2 — Condensed revision of all subjects
- Do not re-read full books. Use your chapter notes.
- Social Science: Review your notes + solve chapter-end Q&A from Sura's guide
- Science: Go through your "Science facts" notebook 3 times this week
- Polity: Review Lakshmikanth notes on Fundamental Rights, Parliament
Week 3–4 — Previous year papers (timed)
- Solve 1 full Group 4 paper per week under exam conditions: 200 questions, 3 hours, no breaks
- After each paper: mark questions wrong, identify which topic they came from, revise that topic next day
- Download papers free from tnpsc.gov.in or Winmeen.com
By end of Month 5: You should be scoring 125–135 in practice papers. If lower, identify the 2–3 weakest topics and give them extra time in Month 6.
Month 6: Mock Tests + Final Revision
Mock tests — 2 per week (Winmeen or Sura's test series)
- Treat each mock as the real exam: formal setting, no phone, strict time
- After each test: spend 30 minutes reviewing every wrong answer
- Track your score each week — it should be improving
Topic-wise revision based on mock test analysis
- Spend 2–3 days on whichever topics your mock tests reveal as weak
- Don't try to learn new topics in Month 6 — only revise and consolidate
Current affairs — last 6 months review
- Go through your daily current affairs register from Month 1 to now
- Focus on Tamil Nadu state events, government schemes, national awards
- Use Sura's last 6 months current affairs compilation if available
Final week:
- Light revision only — 2–3 hours per day
- Read through Science facts notebook and History dates one more time
- Sleep properly the 2 nights before the exam. Fatigue loses marks.
Scoring Strategy — How to Cross 140 Out of 200
Most Group 4 candidates score between 115 and 140. The difference between those who get posted and those who don't is focused strategy, not more hours of study.
Target distribution:
- Aptitude: 80 out of 100 (achievable with 2 months of practice)
- General Studies: 65 out of 100 (realistic with full Samacheer coverage)
- Total: 145 — well above the cut-off for most categories
Per-subject targets:
| Topic | Total Marks | Target Score |
|---|---|---|
| General Science | 20–25 | 18–20 |
| TN + Indian History | 23–28 | 18–22 |
| Geography | 12–15 | 10–12 |
| Polity | 10–12 | 8–10 |
| Economy + Current Affairs | 18–25 | 12–15 |
| Arithmetic | 25–30 | 22–26 |
| Reasoning | 25–30 | 22–26 |
| English + Tamil | 40 | 30–35 |
Exam-day tactics:
- Do not spend more than 45 seconds per question. Move on if stuck — you can return.
- Attempt Tamil and English first if confident — these are usually the quickest to answer.
- In General Studies, skip questions you are completely unsure of — don't guess wildly (even without negative marking, time is precious).
- In Aptitude, solve Reasoning fully before touching Arithmetic — Reasoning is faster.
VAO — What's Different from Group 4
VAO (Village Administrative Officer) is administered by the Revenue Department and filled through TNPSC. It carries slightly more prestige than a standard Group 4 post and comes with field responsibilities.
Key differences:
| Factor | Group 4 (Junior Assistant etc.) | VAO |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Class 12 (HSC) | Degree (any discipline) |
| Work setting | Office-based (clerical) | Field-based (village level) |
| Exam pattern | Same — 200 marks, 1 paper | Same pattern |
| Additional syllabus | None specific | Revenue laws, land records basics |
| Notification | Separate from Group 4 | Separate notification |
VAO-specific topics to study:
- Tamil Nadu Revenue laws and land classification basics
- Village Administrative Officer's duties and functions (Revenue Manual)
- Land measurement units used in Tamil Nadu (kani, cent, ground)
- Patta, chitta, adangal — what they are and their purpose
- Government schemes related to land: free patta scheme, EC registration
VAO pay structure:
- Basic: Rs. 20,600–65,500 (Level 8 pay matrix)
- Total take-home with DA, HRA, and allowances: approximately Rs. 30,000–40,000 per month
- Field posting: VAO is assigned to a specific village or group of villages in a taluk
Salary and Benefits of Group 4 Posts
This is why crores of Tamil Nadu students write TNPSC every year.
Junior Assistant pay structure:
- Basic pay: Rs. 20,600–65,500 (Level 8 in state pay matrix)
- Dearness Allowance (DA): Updated periodically, currently 38–46% of basic
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): 8–16% of basic depending on posting location
- Total in-hand: approximately Rs. 30,000–45,000 per month at entry level
Benefits beyond salary:
- Job security: No layoffs, termination only for disciplinary reasons
- Pension: National Pension System (NPS) for employees joining after 2003
- Medical: Government hospital treatment for employee and dependents
- Leave: Earned leave, casual leave, medical leave — generous compared to private sector
- Transfers: Generally within the same district or region
Career progression for Junior Assistant:
- Junior Assistant → Senior Assistant (5–8 years)
- Senior Assistant → Office Superintendent (8–12 years)
- Office Superintendent → Section Officer (15–20 years)
- Each promotion comes with a pay increase
The most underrated benefit: predictability. Government salary arrives on the 1st of every month, every month, for 30+ years. No quarterly targets, no layoff risk, no salary delay.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Buying coaching material before reading Samacheer books Sura's guide, coaching notes, and YouTube videos are summaries of Samacheer Kalvi. Read the original books first. All TNPSC questions trace back to them.
Mistake 2: Ignoring Aptitude until the last month Aptitude is 100 out of 200 marks. Candidates who start practising only in the final month consistently underperform. Start R.S. Aggarwal in Month 4 at the latest — Month 3 is better.
Mistake 3: Skipping Tamil Nadu–specific topics Tamil Nadu History and TN Geography give 25–30 marks. Many candidates study Indian History well but neglect TN — do not make this mistake. Pallava, Chola, Pandya, Nayak dynasties; Kaveri dispute; TN districts and industries — all are exam-relevant.
Mistake 4: Not solving previous year papers Reading Samacheer books without practising past papers is like training for a marathon without running. Solve at least the last 5 years of Group 4 papers. TNPSC repeats question patterns — not exact questions, but topic focus is consistent.
Mistake 5: Trying to memorise everything Group 4 rewards understanding more than rote memorisation. If you understand why the Chola empire fell, you can answer unfamiliar questions about it. Read to understand, not just to memorise dates.
