What is JEE?
JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is the gateway to India's top engineering colleges — the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes. If you dream of studying at IIT Madras, NIT Trichy, or any premier engineering institute, JEE is the exam you must crack.
JEE has two stages:
- JEE Main — for NITs, IIITs, and as the qualifier for Advanced
- JEE Advanced — for the 23 IITs only
For Tamil Nadu students, JEE matters most if you want an IIT/NIT. For state engineering colleges (Anna University affiliated), admission is through TNEA based on Class 12 marks — no entrance exam. So decide your target early.
JEE Main vs JEE Advanced
| Feature | JEE Main | JEE Advanced |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | NTA | One of the IITs (rotating) |
| For admission to | NITs, IIITs, CFTIs | 23 IITs |
| Difficulty | Moderate–Hard | Very Hard |
| Attempts | 2 sessions/year, 3 years | 2 times in 2 years |
| Qualifier for | JEE Advanced | — |
| Pattern | Mostly direct, speed-based | Multi-concept, deep |
JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026
| Subject | MCQs | Numerical | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Total | 60 | 15 | 300 |
- Marking: +4 correct, −1 wrong (MCQs); numericals +4, −1
- Duration: 3 hours
- Mode: Computer-based (CBT)
- Sessions: January and April — best of two scores counts
Syllabus — NCERT Base, JEE Depth
JEE follows the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus but tests it at much greater depth than board exams. For Tamil Nadu State Board students:
- Chemistry: NCERT is directly tested — read it cover to cover. Samacheer has gaps.
- Mathematics: Needs heavy problem practice beyond Samacheer. Calculus, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry are high-weightage.
- Physics: Conceptual depth required. Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Modern Physics dominate.
Best Books for JEE
| Subject | Concept | Problems |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | NCERT, HC Verma | DC Pandey, Irodov (Advanced) |
| Chemistry | NCERT | OP Tandon (Physical), MS Chouhan (Organic), JD Lee (Inorganic) |
| Maths | NCERT, RD Sharma | Cengage series, ML Khanna |
| Practice | — | Previous 10 yr Main + Advanced papers |
Avoid book overload. NCERT + one strong problem book per subject + previous papers is the proven combination.
High-Yield Chapters (Physics · Chemistry · Maths)
JEE Main gives equal weight to all three subjects (100 marks each). Focus your effort on the chapters that repeat most:
Physics:
- Mechanics (kinematics, laws of motion, work-energy, rotational, gravitation)
- Electrodynamics (Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, EMI & AC) — largest block
- Modern Physics & Semiconductors — high-yield, scoring
- Optics, Thermodynamics, Waves & SHM
Chemistry:
- Physical: Mole Concept, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics
- Organic: GOC, Hydrocarbons, oxygen/nitrogen functional groups, Biomolecules, Polymers
- Inorganic: Periodic Properties, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, p-block, s-block
Mathematics:
- Calculus (limits, differentiation, integration, area, differential equations) — biggest weightage
- Algebra (quadratics, sequences, complex numbers, binomial, P&C, probability)
- Coordinate Geometry (straight lines, circles, conics)
- Vectors & 3D Geometry, Trigonometry, Matrices & Determinants
Calculus + Algebra in Maths, Electrodynamics + Modern Physics, and Physical + Organic Chemistry together cover the bulk of the paper.
Study Plan (2-year and 1-year)
| Phase | 2-year track | 1-year track |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Class 11: build concepts + NCERT | Months 1–4: Class 11 fast + problem sets |
| Build | Class 12: full syllabus + JEE problem books | Months 5–8: Class 12 + reference problems |
| Practice | Chapter tests + previous papers | Months 9–10: previous papers + part tests |
| Revision | Full mocks weekly + revision | Months 11–12: full mocks every 2–3 days |
Daily routine: solve problems in all three subjects every day (concept → solved examples → unsolved). JEE rewards problem-solving speed, not reading.
How to Approach Each Subject
- Maths: Pure practice. Solve large volumes; build speed and accuracy. Maintain a formula sheet and revise it daily.
- Physics: Strong concepts + numericals. Mechanics and Electrodynamics deserve the most time.
- Chemistry: NCERT is decisive for Inorganic & Physical basics; practise Organic mechanisms and Physical numericals regularly. The fastest-scoring subject if NCERT is solid.

Tamil Nadu Engineering Options
| Target | Route | Exam |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Madras | JEE Advanced | JEE Main → Advanced |
| NIT Trichy | JEE Main (home state quota) | JEE Main |
| Anna University / TN govt colleges | TNEA | No entrance — Class 12 marks |
| Private deemed universities | Own entrance (VITEEE, SRMJEEE) | Separate exams |
Key decision: If your goal is an Anna University seat, focus on Class 12 board marks for TNEA. If you want IIT/NIT, commit fully to JEE — it needs 2 years of focused preparation.
Realistic Targets
| Goal | JEE Main Percentile / Advanced Rank |
|---|---|
| NIT Trichy CSE (home state) | ~99.0+ percentile |
| Other NIT branches | 97–99 percentile |
| Qualify for JEE Advanced | ~90+ percentile (top 2.5 lakh) |
| IIT (any branch) | Advanced rank under ~15,000 |
| IIT Madras CSE | Advanced rank under ~700 |
Indicative; cut-offs change yearly with difficulty and category.
Common Mistakes TN Students Make
- Treating JEE like a board exam — JEE needs problem-solving, not memorisation
- Skipping NCERT Chemistry — it's directly tested and high-scoring
- Not practising computer-based mocks — the CBT interface needs familiarity
- Starting too late — JEE needs at least 18–24 months of serious prep
- Ignoring Maths speed — slow calculation kills your Main score
Final Advice
JEE is a marathon of consistent problem-solving. Build concepts from NCERT, drill problems daily from standard books, take weekly mocks, and revise formulas relentlessly. Decide early whether JEE (IIT/NIT) or TNEA (Anna University) fits your goals — and commit fully.
