NEET 2026 Complete Guide — Syllabus, Books, Strategy & Tamil Nadu Admission

Complete NEET preparation guide for Tamil Nadu students — exam pattern, NCERT-based syllabus, best books, study plan, and how TN medical admission and 7.5% reservation work.

Updated 3 June 2026

What is NEET?

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single gateway to medical education in India. If you want to become a doctor (MBBS), dentist (BDS), or pursue AYUSH courses (Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, Unani), NEET is mandatory — there is no other route to a government or private medical college.

For Tamil Nadu students, NEET is especially significant. Before 2017, TN admitted students based on Class 12 marks. Now NEET is compulsory, which changed how students must prepare — from board-style memorisation to NCERT-based conceptual learning.

NEET Exam Pattern 2026

SubjectQuestions (Total / To Attempt)Marks
Physics50 / 45180
Chemistry50 / 45180
Botany50 / 45180
Zoology50 / 45180
Total200 / 180720
  • Marking: +4 for correct, −1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted
  • Duration: 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Mode: Offline (pen-and-paper, OMR sheet)
  • Languages: Available in Tamil and English (and 11 other languages)

Tip: Choosing the Tamil medium question paper is allowed, but most reference material is in English. Many TN students opt for English to access better resources.

Syllabus — NCERT is King

NEET strictly follows the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This is the single most important thing for Tamil Nadu State Board students to understand:

  • Biology: ~95% direct from NCERT. Samacheer Kalvi covers most of it, but always cross-verify with NCERT.
  • Chemistry: NCERT is the base. Samacheer has gaps in Physical and Organic Chemistry — fill them.
  • Physics: Biggest gap area. Samacheer Physics is not enough; study NCERT + a problem book.

Best Books for NEET

SubjectPrimaryReference
BiologyNCERT Class 11 & 12Trueman's Biology, MTG Fingertips
ChemistryNCERT Class 11 & 12OP Tandon (Physical/Organic), MS Chouhan (Organic)
PhysicsNCERT + conceptsHC Verma, DC Pandey (Objective)
PracticePrevious 10 yr papersMTG 33 Years NEET Chapterwise

Don't over-buy books. NCERT + one reference per subject + previous papers is enough. Quality of revision beats quantity of books.

Subject-Wise Weightage & High-Yield Chapters

NEET has 180 questions (720 marks): Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Botany 45, Zoology 45. Biology (Botany + Zoology) carries half the paper (360 marks) — it is the highest-scoring and most predictable section, so master it first.

Biology — highest yield (focus here for rank):

  • Human Physiology (digestion, circulation, neural, excretion) — very high weightage
  • Genetics & Evolution
  • Cell Biology & Cell Division
  • Plant Physiology (photosynthesis, respiration)
  • Reproduction (human + plant)
  • Ecology & Environment
  • Biotechnology & its applications

Chemistry — balance all three branches:

  • Physical: Mole Concept, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Solutions
  • Organic: General Organic Chemistry (GOC), Hydrocarbons, Oxygen-containing compounds (alcohols, aldehydes, acids), Biomolecules
  • Inorganic: Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, p-block

Physics — concept + numerical practice:

  • Mechanics (laws of motion, work-energy, rotational)
  • Electrodynamics (Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, EMI) — biggest block
  • Modern Physics (dual nature, atoms & nuclei) — easy, high-yield
  • Optics, Thermodynamics, Waves

Rule of thumb: Biology + Inorganic/Organic Chemistry = your scoring base; Physics + Physical Chemistry = where rank is decided.

12-Month Study Plan

PhaseMonthsFocus
Foundation1–4Finish NCERT Class 11 (all subjects) + solve NCERT exercises; begin chapter-wise MCQs
Build5–8Finish NCERT Class 12 + reference books for weak areas; weekly subject tests
Practice9–10Previous 10 years' papers, chapter-wise then full papers; build a mistake notebook
Revision11–12Revise NCERT 3–4×, redo mistakes, one full mock every 2–3 days under exam timing

Daily routine (during prep): ~2 hrs Biology, ~2 hrs Chemistry, ~2 hrs Physics, plus 1 hr revision/MCQs. Adjust to your weak subjects.

How to Approach Each Subject

  • Biology: Read NCERT line by line — NEET lifts statements directly. Make diagrams and one-liner notes. Revise repeatedly; this is your rank-securing subject.
  • Chemistry: NCERT for Inorganic & basics; practise Organic mechanisms and Physical numericals daily. Learn named reactions and exceptions.
  • Physics: Build concepts from NCERT, then drill numericals from a problem book. Focus on formula application and speed; don't leave Physics for the end.

Tamil Nadu Medical Admission — How It Works

After NEET results, Tamil Nadu conducts its own counselling for state-quota seats (85% of government college seats):

1. NEET score qualifies you (must clear the cut-off percentile) 2. TN medical counselling (by Directorate of Medical Education) allots seats by NEET rank + category + reservation 3. Reservation: TN's 69% reservation applies (BC, MBC, SC, ST, etc.) 4. 7.5% government school quota: Horizontal reservation for students who studied Class 6–12 in TN government schools

The 7.5% Government School Quota

Introduced in 2020, this gives a major advantage to government school students:

  • Must have studied Classes 6 to 12 in a Tamil Nadu government school
  • Must clear NEET (any score above the qualifying cut-off)
  • 7.5% of all medical seats are reserved for this group
  • Has helped hundreds of rural students enter MBBS each year

Realistic Score Targets (Tamil Nadu)

GoalApprox. NEET Score (/720)
Government MBBS (OC)580–620+
Government MBBS (BC/MBC)520–580
Government MBBS (SC/ST)450–520
Govt school 7.5% quota MBBSQualifying cut-off and above
Private/self-financing MBBS400–500

These are indicative and vary every year with difficulty and number of applicants.

Common Mistakes Tamil Nadu Students Make

  • Relying only on Samacheer Kalvi — it is not enough for Physics and Chemistry
  • Ignoring NCERT Biology line-by-line — NEET asks direct NCERT statements
  • Skipping Physics because it's hard — you lose 180 easy marks
  • Not solving previous papers — patterns repeat heavily
  • No mock test practice — exam temperament and time management decide rank

Final Advice

NEET rewards consistency over intensity. A student who studies NCERT thoroughly for 12 months and revises 4 times will beat a student who reads 10 books once. Master NCERT, solve previous papers, take weekly mocks, and use Tamil Nadu's reservation advantages wisely.

Frequently Asked Questions
