How to Read the Group IV Syllabus

TNPSC Syllabus Guide is part of TNPSC Group IV Services preparation. Use it with the active TNPSC notification, because the notification controls the exact syllabus, scheme, post list, age rules, fees, vacancies, reservation details, and document instructions.

Do not read the syllabus as a long list of subjects. Break it into daily checklist units under Tamil eligibility, General studies, Aptitude and mental ability, Tamil Nadu general knowledge, Current affairs. Each unit should end with previous-year questions or a short practice set so you know whether the topic is actually understood.

  • Mark every heading as pending, first reading done, revised, or tested.
  • Keep high-frequency previous-paper areas in a separate revision list.
  • Do not add extra topics unless they connect clearly to a syllabus heading.

Turning Syllabus into a Study Plan

A syllabus becomes useful only when it controls your timetable. Put heavier topics on longer study days, keep factual subjects in revision cycles, and reserve test days for mixed practice rather than fresh reading.

If the topic belongs to technical services, give more time to the core technical paper. If it belongs to Group I or Group II, maintain General Studies, Tamil eligibility, aptitude, and Tamil Nadu-specific topics together so one paper does not collapse while another improves.

Group IV Syllabus Breakdown

The Group IV syllabus should be split by stage and paper. Start with the official scheme, then map each syllabus area to study sources, previous papers, revision notes, and mock-test practice.

Paper or Stage
What to Study
Priority
How to Prepare
General Tamil
Grammar, literature, authors, Tamil culture, school-level language topics, and repeated previous-paper patterns.
Very high because it can decide score and confidence.
Study daily in short blocks and revise author/literature facts repeatedly.
General Studies
School-level science, history, geography, polity, economy, Tamil Nadu facts, and current affairs.
High for balanced scoring.
Use Samacheer basics, one-page notes, and topic-wise MCQs.
Aptitude and mental ability
Arithmetic, simplification, percentage, ratio, time and work, reasoning, and basic mental ability.
High because practice improves marks quickly.
Practice formulas and small sets daily; record careless mistakes.
Document or counselling stage
SSLC/HSC, community, PSTM, typing or special certificates where the post needs them.
Compulsory for final stages.
Check post-wise requirements instead of assuming every Group IV post is identical.

High Priority

  • Tamil eligibility
  • General studies
  • Aptitude and mental ability
  • Previous-paper repeated topics

Medium Priority

  • Tamil Nadu general knowledge
  • Current affairs
  • Current affairs linked to Tamil Nadu and the active exam stage
  • Mock-test analysis after first syllabus coverage

Do Not Skip

  • Tamil eligibility or language component where notified
  • Aptitude and mental ability if it appears in the scheme
  • Notification-specific document and qualification rules

Source Mapping

Do not attach every popular book to every topic. Use school books for foundations, official syllabus headings for boundaries, previous papers for priority, and one main source for deeper subject coverage.

  • General Studies: use Tamil Nadu school-book foundations, concise notes, and previous TNPSC questions.
  • Aptitude: use formula sheets, daily small practice sets, and mistake logs instead of only reading solved examples.
  • Tamil eligibility or General Tamil: use grammar, literature, author facts, and repeated previous-paper patterns.
  • Current affairs: maintain Tamil Nadu, India, economy, science, environment, and scheme notes in separate headings.
  • Official material: use notification, syllabus, scheme, previous papers, answer keys, and dashboard updates as final boundaries.

Time Plan

The syllabus should decide your calendar. Finish one clear first pass, then move into revision, previous papers, mixed tests, and final short notes.

  1. 1.Days 1-7: Read notification, print syllabus, identify paper/stage pattern, and mark eligibility or document risks.
  2. 2.Days 8-30: Complete the first pass of high-priority syllabus areas with short notes and topic-wise practice.
  3. 3.Days 31-60: Add medium-priority areas, previous-paper classification, current affairs revision, and weekly mixed tests.
  4. 4.Days 61-90: Shift into full mocks, error-log revision, repeated facts, formulas, Tamil practice, and document readiness.
  5. 5.Final 15 days: Stop collecting bulky new material; revise short notes, official instructions, hall-ticket rules, and repeated mistakes.

What to check first

  • Open the active notification and the TNPSC syllabus page before following any book or coaching plan.
  • Confirm whether the paper is SSLC, higher-secondary, degree, diploma, ITI, or technical-subject standard.
  • Separate Tamil eligibility, General Studies, Aptitude, and post-specific subject papers.

How to use the syllabus

  • Convert every syllabus unit into a checklist.
  • Mark PYQ frequency beside each unit after solving previous papers.
  • Revise high-fact areas weekly: Tamil Nadu history, polity, schemes, geography, and current affairs.
