Q12. A bank offers 8% compound interest compounded annually. If Rs 20,000 is deposited, what is the difference between CI for the 2nd year and the 1st year?
CI for 1st year:
A_1 = 20,000 × 108/100 = Rs 21,600
CI_1 = 21,600 - 20,000 = Rs 1,600
CI for 2nd year:
A_2 = 21,600 × 108/100 = Rs 23,328
CI for 2nd year = 23,328 - 21,600 = Rs 1,728
Difference = 1,728 - 1,600 = Rs 128
Answer: Difference = Rs 128
Q13. The compound interest on a sum at 10% per annum for 2 years is Rs 1,260. Find the sum.
CI = Rs 1,260, R = 10%, n = 2
CI = P[(1 + R/100)^n - 1]
1,260 = P[(1 + 10/100)^2 - 1]
1,260 = P[(11/10)^2 - 1]
1,260 = P[121/100 - 1]
1,260 = P[21/100]

Exercise 4.5 — Word Problems and Applications
Q1. A shopkeeper gives a discount of 15% on a shirt marked at Rs 800 and still makes a profit of 10%. Find the cost price.
Step 1: Find SP.
SP = MP × (1 - 15/100) = 800 × 85/100 = Rs 680
Step 2: Find CP.
CP = SP × 100/(100 + Profit%)
= 680 × 100/110
= Rs 618.18
Answer: CP = Rs 618.18 (approximately)
Q2. A shopkeeper buys an article for Rs 1,200 and marks it at 40% above cost. He then gives a discount of 25%. Find the profit percentage.
CP = Rs 1,200
MP = 1,200 × (1 + 40/100) = 1,200 × 1.4 = Rs 1,680
SP = 1,680 × (1 - 25/100) = 1,680 × 0.75 = Rs 1,260
Profit = SP - CP = 1,260 - 1,200 = Rs 60
Profit % = (60/1,200) × 100 = 5%
Answer: 5% profit
Q3. A man deposited Rs 20,000 in a bank at 8% per annum compound interest. How much will he receive after 2 years? What is the interest earned?
P = Rs 20,000, R = 8%, n = 2
A = 20,000 × (1 + 8/100)^2
= 20,000 × (108/100)^2
= 20,000 × 11664/10000
= Rs 23,328
CI = 23,328 - 20,000 = Rs 3,328
Answer: Amount = Rs 23,328, Interest = Rs 3,328
Q4. The price of a TV is Rs 25,000. A sales tax of 8% is added. Find the total amount to be paid.
Sales tax = 8% of 25,000 = (8/100) × 25,000 = Rs 2,000
Total amount = 25,000 + 2,000 = Rs 27,000
Answer: Rs 27,000
Q5. A person borrows Rs 15,000 at 6% per annum simple interest and lends it at 8% per annum simple interest. Find his gain after 3 years.
Interest paid (at 6%): SI_out = (15,000 × 6 × 3)/100 = Rs 2,700
Interest earned (at 8%): SI_in = (15,000 × 8 × 3)/100 = Rs 3,600
Gain = 3,600 - 2,700 = Rs 900
Answer: Gain = Rs 900
Q6. In a factory, the production of goods increases by 10% every year. If the present production is 50,000 units, find the production after 3 years.
P = 50,000, R = 10%, n = 3
A = 50,000 × (1 + 10/100)^3
= 50,000 × (11/10)^3
= 50,000 × 1331/1000
= 66,550
Answer: 66,550 units
Q7. The population of a village is 20,000. It increases by 10% in the first year and decreases by 5% in the second year. Find the population after 2 years.
After 1st year: 20,000 × 110/100 = 22,000

Q10. A shopkeeper sells a shirt at Rs 720 after giving a discount of 10%. If he makes a profit of 20%, find the marked price and the cost price.
Step 1: Find CP from profit.
SP = Rs 720, Profit % = 20%
CP = 720 × 100/120 = Rs 600
Step 2: Find MP from discount.
SP = MP × (1 - 10/100)
720 = MP × 90/100
MP = 720 × 100/90 = Rs 800
Answer: CP = Rs 600, MP = Rs 800
Common Mistakes
1. Dividing by Selling Price instead of Cost Price for profit/loss percentage — Profit % = (Profit / CP) × 100, NOT (Profit / SP) × 100. Similarly for loss. Always divide by the cost price.
2. Confusing simple and compound interest formulas — SI = PRT/100 uses the original principal every year. CI = A - P where A = P(1 + R/100)^n recalculates on the accumulated amount. They give the same result only for 1 year.
3. Wrong time period in interest calculations — If the rate is per annum but time is in months, convert: T = months/12. For days: T = days/365. For half-yearly compounding: rate = R/2, periods = 2n.
4. Successive discounts are NOT additive — A 10% discount followed by a 20% discount is NOT 30%. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Example: Rs 100 with 10% off = Rs 90, then 20% off Rs 90 = Rs 72 (total discount is 28%, not 30%).
5. Percentage increase/decrease reversal error — If a price increases by 20%, the new price is 120% of the original. To return to the original, you need a 16.67% decrease (NOT 20%). The percentage change is always relative to the original base value.
6. Forgetting to add overhead costs to CP — When a problem mentions transport, repair, or other costs, these must be ADDED to the purchase price to get the true cost price. CP = purchase price + all additional costs.
7. Confusing Amount and Interest — SI/PRT formula gives the INTEREST, not the Amount. Amount = Principal + Interest. Similarly, CI formula A = P(1+R/100)^n gives the AMOUNT. CI = A - P.
8. Depreciation uses subtraction — For depreciation (value decreasing), the formula is A = P(1 - R/100)^n, using subtraction, NOT addition. Many students write A = P(1 + R/100)^n for depreciation, which is wrong.
