How to Use This Page

This page provides step-by-step solutions for every exercise in Chapter 3: Ratio and Proportion of the TN Samacheer Kalvi Class 6 Maths textbook (Term 1). Work through each solution on your own first, then check here. Every calculation is shown in full so you can follow the reasoning, not just the final answer.

Key Concepts (Quick Recap)

Ratio

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind using division. If there are 20 girls and 25 boys in a class, the ratio of girls to boys is written as 20 : 25, which simplifies to 4 : 5.

  • The first term is the antecedent, the second is the consequent.
  • A ratio has no units — it is a pure number comparison.
  • Order matters: 3 : 5 is not the same as 5 : 3.

Proportion

When two ratios are equal, they are said to be in proportion. If a : b = c : d, we write a : b :: c : d.

  • Cross-product rule: a × d = b × c
  • The terms a and d are called extremes; b and c are called means.
  • In a proportion, product of extremes = product of means.

Unitary Method

1. Find the value of one unit first. 2. Multiply to get the value of the required number of units.

Direct Proportion

When one quantity increases, the other increases in the same ratio (or both decrease together).

  • If 5 books cost ₹100, then 8 books cost ₹160 (more books → more cost).

Inverse Proportion

When one quantity increases, the other decreases in the same ratio.

  • If 10 workers finish a job in 6 days, then 20 workers finish it in 3 days (more workers → fewer days).

Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting to simplify ratios: Always divide both terms by their HCF. Writing 20 : 25 instead of 4 : 5 loses marks. Check: can both numbers be divided by a common factor greater than 1? If yes, simplify.

2. Mixing up the order of terms in a ratio: "Ratio of boys to girls" means boys : girls, not girls : boys. Read the question carefully and write terms in the exact order asked.

3. Wrong cross-multiplication in proportions: Remember the rule is a × d = b × c (product of extremes equals product of means). Some students write a × b = c × d — this is wrong. Always pair the outer terms and the inner terms.

4. Confusing direct and inverse proportion: If more of one quantity gives more of the other (more books → more cost), it is direct proportion. If more of one quantity gives less of the other (more workers → fewer days), it is inverse proportion. Always ask: "Does the second quantity go up or down when the first goes up?"

5. Skipping the unitary step: In the unitary method, always find the value of one unit first, then multiply. Skipping directly to the answer without showing this step can lead to calculation errors and loses method marks in exams.

6. Not adding ratio terms for division problems: When dividing an amount in a ratio, remember to find the total number of parts (sum of all ratio terms) first. If the ratio is 2 : 3, the total parts are 2 + 3 = 5, and each part equals the total amount divided by 5.

7. Adding units to a ratio: A ratio has no units. Writing "3 km : 5 km" as a final answer is wrong — it should be just "3 : 5". The units cancel out because a ratio is a comparison by division.

Exam Checklist

Before you write your exam, make sure you can do each of these:

  • [ ] Simplify a ratio to its lowest terms using HCF
  • [ ] Compare two ratios by converting them to equivalent ratios with a common second term (or comparing as fractions)
  • [ ] Check if four terms are in proportion using the cross-product rule (ad = bc)
  • [ ] Find a missing term in a proportion using cross-multiplication
  • [ ] Divide a quantity in a given ratio — find total parts, then multiply each share
  • [ ] Apply the unitary method — always find the value of one unit first
  • [ ] Identify direct vs. inverse proportion — ask "does the other quantity increase or decrease?"
  • [ ] Solve direct proportion problems — if x increases, y increases proportionally
  • [ ] Solve inverse proportion problems — if x increases, y decreases proportionally (product stays constant)
  • [ ] Write ratios without units — always simplify and remove units from the final answer
  • [ ] Show all steps — examiners award marks for the method, not just the final answer
