How to Study Each Section
Literature (Prose and Poem)
1. Read the chapter from the textbook — note difficult words. 2. Write meanings for underlined/bolded words. 3. Read the end-of-chapter questions and answer them in your notebook. 4. For poems: identify two literary devices with examples. 5. Write a 4–5 sentence summary of each chapter in Tamil.
Thirukkural
1. Memorise each selected kural word for word. 2. Note the adhikaram (chapter) name and number. 3. Write padha vilakkam (word meanings) for each kural. 4. Write a 3-sentence poruporul (general meaning) in Tamil. 5. Connect each kural to a real-life example.
Grammar (Ilakkanam)
1. Do every fill-in-the-blank exercise in the textbook. 2. Practise verb transformation: all three tenses, all persons. 3. Practise negative form conversion. 4. Learn all idioms (mozi thodar) and proverbs (pazhamozhi) with meanings. 5. Practise sentence combination using vinai eccham.
Writing
- Essay: 150–200 words. Introduction (2 lines) + 2 body paragraphs + conclusion.
- Letter: Learn the format and practise one informal + one formal letter per term.
- Summary: Practise summarising a paragraph in half the word count.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Answering in Tamil but using Roman script (transliteration) — always write in Tamil script.
- Not memorising Thirukkural exactly — even one word wrong costs marks.
- Skipping prose chapters because grammar seems more manageable — prose questions carry the most marks.
- Writing essay without paragraphing — structure matters.
