Solution

a = 5, c = 13, b² = 169 − 25 = 144.

Equation: y²/25 − x²/144 = 1

Q5. Find the foci, vertices and latus rectum of y²/16 − x²/9 = 1.

  • Vertices: (0, ±4)
  • Latus rectum = 2b²/a = 18/4 = 9/2

Q6. Find the equation of the hyperbola with vertices (±7, 0) and e = 4/3.

Solution

a = 7, e = 4/3. c = ae = 28/3.

b² = c² − a² = 784/9 − 49 = 784/9 − 441/9 = 343/9.

Equation: x²/49 − 9y²/343 = 1 (or x²/49 − y²/(343/9) = 1)

Q7. Find the equation of the hyperbola with foci (0, ±√10) and passing through (2, 3).

Solution

c² = 10, equation: y²/a² − x²/b² = 1 where a² + b² = 10.

Passes through (2, 3): 9/a² − 4/b² = 1.

Let a² = t. Then b² = 10 − t.

9/t − 4/(10 − t) = 1

9(10 − t) − 4t = t(10 − t)

90 − 9t − 4t = 10t − t²

90 − 13t = 10t − t²

t² − 23t + 90 = 0

(t − 5)(t − 18) = 0 → t = 5 or t = 18.

Since a² < c² = 10, a² = 5, b² = 5.

Equation: y²/5 − x²/5 = 1 (or y² − x² = 5)

Q8. Find the eccentricity of the hyperbola with latus rectum = 8 and conjugate axis = 2√2.

Solution

Conjugate axis = 2b = 2√2, so b = √2, b² = 2.

Latus rectum = 2b²/a = 8 → 4/a = 8 → a = 1/2, a² = 1/4.

c² = a² + b² = 1/4 + 2 = 9/4, c = 3/2.

e = c/a = (3/2)/(1/2) = 3

Miscellaneous Exercise

Q1. If a parabolic reflector is 20 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep, find the focus.

Solution

Let the parabola be y² = 4ax. The rim point is (5, 10) (half the diameter = 10).

100 = 4a(5) → a = 5.

Focus is at (5, 0), which is 5 cm from the vertex.

Q2. An arch is in the form of a semi-ellipse. It is 8 m wide and 2 m high at the centre. Find the height of the arch at a point 1.5 m from one end.

Solution

Equation: x²/16 + y²/4 = 1 (a = 4, b = 2).

Point 1.5 m from one end means x = 4 − 1.5 = 2.5 m from centre (or x = −2.5 + 8 = measured from the other end).

Actually, 1.5 m from one end (at x = −4) means x = −4 + 1.5 = −2.5.

y² = 4(1 − x²/16) = 4(1 − 6.25/16) = 4(9.75/16) = 39/16

y = √(39)/4 ≈ 1.56 m

Q3. A rod of length 12 cm moves with its ends always touching the coordinate axes. Find the equation of the locus of a point P on the rod at a distance of 3 cm from the end in contact with the x-axis.

Solution

Let the end on x-axis be (a, 0) and on y-axis be (0, b). Then a² + b² = 144.

Point P divides the rod in ratio 3 : 9 = 1 : 3 from the x-axis end.

P = ((3/12) × 0 + (9/12) × a, (3/12) × b + (9/12) × 0) = (3a/4, b/4).

Wait — P is 3 cm from the x-axis end, so it divides in ratio 3 : 9.

h = (9 × 0 + 3 × a)/12 = a/4, no — let me redo.

P is at distance 3 from end on x-axis. Coordinates of P:

x = (9/12)(a) + (3/12)(0) = 3a/4... Actually:

End A is on x-axis: (a, 0). End B is on y-axis: (0, b). P is 3 cm from A.

P = A + (3/12)(B − A) = (a, 0) + (1/4)(−a, b) = (a − a/4, b/4) = (3a/4, b/4).

Let P = (h, k). Then h = 3a/4 → a = 4h/3, k = b/4 → b = 4k.

Substituting in a² + b² = 144: (4h/3)² + (4k)² = 144

16h²/9 + 16k² = 144 → h²/9 + k² = 9 → h²/81 + k²/9 = 1

Equation of locus: x²/81 + y²/9 = 1 (an ellipse)

Q4. Find the area enclosed by the ellipse x²/a² + y²/b² = 1.

Solution

Area = πab. (Standard result — the area of an ellipse with semi-axes a and b.)

Area = πab

Q5. Find the equation of the circle passing through the foci of the ellipse x²/25 + y²/9 = 1 and with centre at (0, 0).

Solution

Foci: c = √(25 − 9) = 4, so foci at (±4, 0).

Circle passes through (4, 0) and (−4, 0) with centre (0, 0).

r = 4, equation: x² + y² = 16

Q6. Find the equation of the hyperbola with foci (±6, 0) and e = 3/2.

Solution

c = 6, e = 3/2. a = c/e = 6/(3/2) = 4.

b² = c² − a² = 36 − 16 = 20.

Equation: x²/16 − y²/20 = 1

Q7. A man running a racecourse notes that the sum of the distances from the two flag posts from him is always 10 m and the distance between the flag posts is 8 m. Find the equation of the path traced by the man.

Solution

Sum of distances = 10 = 2a, so a = 5. Distance between foci = 8 = 2c, so c = 4.

b² = a² − c² = 25 − 16 = 9.

Path is an ellipse: x²/25 + y²/9 = 1

Q8. Find the equation of the hyperbola where foci are (0, ±12) and latus rectum is 36.

Solution

c = 12, latus rectum = 2b²/a = 36, so b² = 18a.

Also c² = a² + b² → 144 = a² + 18a

a² + 18a − 144 = 0

a = [−18 ± √(324 + 576)]/2 = [−18 ± √900]/2 = [−18 ± 30]/2

a = 6 (taking positive value).

b² = 18(6) = 108.

Equation: y²/36 − x²/108 = 1

Q9. Find the equation of the ellipse with centre at (0, 0), major axis on the y-axis and passing through (1, 3) and (2, 2).

Solution

Equation: x²/b² + y²/a² = 1.

Through (1, 3): 1/b² + 9/a² = 1 …(1)

Through (2, 2): 4/b² + 4/a² = 1 …(2)

From (2): 4/b² = 1 − 4/a² → 1/b² = (1 − 4/a²)/4.

Substituting in (1): (1 − 4/a²)/4 + 9/a² = 1

1/4 − 1/a² + 9/a² = 1

8/a² = 3/4

a² = 32/3

1/b² = (1 − 4/(32/3))/4 = (1 − 3/8)/4 = (5/8)/4 = 5/32

b² = 32/5

Equation: 5x²/32 + 3y²/32 = 1 (or 5x² + 3y² = 32)

Q10. Find the eccentricity of the ellipse x²/9 + y²/4 = 1.

Solution

a = 3, b = 2. c = √(9 − 4) = √5.

e = √5/3 = √5/3 ≈ 0.745
